People say you haven’t been to Puerto Princesa City, if you weren’t able to see the world famous Underground River. It is the Eiffel Tower, the Angkor Wat, the Empire State of Palawan so every tour package or itinerary there’s Underground River in it.
Unlike, Ugong Rock or Honda Bay Island Hopping, you can’t just “walk-in” as you need to pre-register a clearance first. Be sure to secure this before going. If you don’t have those clearances, officials in the Sabang port won’t allow you to ride a boat going to the park. You will have to ask a friend of yours or a travel agency to book you in advance and submit requirements for the clearance and stuff. For our trip, Mary took care of this. We were able to went to the park worry-free.
After getting the clearance in the office, we patiently waited for our boat in a tent set up near the shore. It was the start of summer so it is pretty hot. Good thing they sell ice creams here.
For this trip, you will have to ride two boats – from Sabang Port going to the Park, and a small boat getting inside the cave river.
For about 5 to 10 minutes, you will see the beautiful surrounding of the island. You will be mesmerized by the beauty of Philippines last frontier.
The beach in the park was very pristine. The water is clear and the sand is powdery. Too bad you can’t swim because it is the loading and unloading docks of the boats so it is very unsafe to swim.
The boat ride from Sabang port going to the park is approximately 5-15 minutes. You won’t get bored because of the beautiful Islands and sandbars that you will see. A big sign will tell you that you are in the vicinity.
Since it’s a wild park, you will see monkeys loitering around the area but beware! They’re not too friendly and if they look they are, always remember that they’re just being friendly to rip you off especially if you have food.
According to management, the park is being visited by 800 to 1000 tourist a day, which is why you have to wait for your turn.
Although the underground river cave is a stretch of approximately 24 km long, only 1 km is allowed to be visited by tourists. According to our guide, the first kilometer is only the safe explored site of the cave. The remaining kilometers were only explored by Italian scientists and is off limits to the public.
Once inside, your boatman will tell some facts about the cave and instruct you where to look and will make a funny remarks about it. The rock formation created by nature was superb. You will be amazed how nature works. Aside from the beautifully formed rocks, you will hear and see water dipping into the river and bats flying. It is very dark inside the cave and the only source of light is the spotlight of the boat. I won’t post some picture inside the cave so it won’t spoil your very own experience.
If only I could swim my way inside the cave, I would. I want to experience and explore every part of the it.
Next part would be the Bona’s Chaolong and Kinabuch’s Grill and Bar.

Before heading to the highlight of the trip which is an overnight stay in a very relaxing place – Sunrise Mansion.

we went to the city market to buy some groceries. The girls went ahead of us and we, the boys, just followed to buy some pasalubongs also. The tricycle fare cost us 13 Pesos per head so I think It’s cheap already and the market is pretty close to where we stayed.
I didn’t bring with me a camera and phone so I wasn’t able to take a photo of the place. Good thing, my friends from work recently had a tour here. You may click the photo above to visit her blog or look to my friend’s section in the lower part of your screen.
The goods here are way cheaper than of those of they are selling near the airport or inside the airport so be sure to drop by the market. You will be able to have a good bargain of pearls, dried seafood products, woven bags and hats.

For around 500 Pesos, I was able buy packs of dried pusit, dried fish, fruit candies, keychain, magnets and foldable bags which I used to transport all my pasalubongs. I was just travelling with my North Face backpack with me which I bought in Vietnam.
After shopping, we headed back to our place and pack for our overnight stay in Sunrise Mansion. Our transport picked us up at around 11:30 AM. We hadn’t eaten lunch or breakfast yet so we asked our driver to take us to the nearest Pares food house. Kuya (driver) took us to Elmer’s Pares which don’t sell Pares so we end up eating Tapsilog.
So much for the side story. The travel time from city center to Sunrise mansion is approximately an hour and forty-five minutes to two-hours. It is kinda far from the city and the sand and beach is not as powdery and appealing as of those in islands surrounding Honda Bay.
Sunrise mansion has 6 rooms and It can accommodate 15-25 people. The cost per night is approximately 200 USD.
The amenities include Free Wifi Access, Cable LED TV, Karaoke, infinity pool, kayak, table tennis, billiard pool, badminton and beach volleyball.
It has a small place near the shore where you can drink your beer while watching the bonfire and tell stories with your friends. The table and chairs are made of used tires. It’s very relaxing.
If you are travelling in a small group, the cost per night is pretty expensive but who cares if you will wake up in the beautiful scenery like this.
If you want an escape from urban living, you would want to try going in Sunrise Mansion. Amenities are complete and you will be relaxed and will have fun in your whole stay.
Next part would be the Ugong Rock Cave Experience.
